Miles and Lines | Victoria Olaleye

Between our long catch-up calls and silences that last longer

Thousands of miles and silence on the line

Voices lingering in calls not answered

You are still my favorite notification

All through gaps in milestones and loud cheers through a screen,

Laughter and echoes in places unseen;

Those sweet words of encouragement without unease of being a bother,

You are my favorite update to keep–

The message I wait to see

Between the inside jokes and lost references,

Stories retold in brief moments we steal from impossible schedules

You are my favorite task, my best tiempo pasado

my time well-spent.

And while you nudge me to find a favourite

someone you hope I’ll call mine,

You are the shoulders planted

for me to lean on

The one whose presence bridges the miles between us.

And when our voices finally echo in the

same room

Just know my eyes will light up, my arms

will be wide open, and I’ll always have space for you.
